Portfoilio task 2: modernism text summary

Modernism came about from artist's responses to modernization, the advance of technology and science, and modernity, which is the life and experience of these changes and advances.

There are two key responses to modernity. The first response being negativity and a slight fear due to an boom in population, especially in the big cities when man thought it was giving way for the machine to overtake

The second response showed that the human could now use the world in different meaning, factors like travel were no longer a problem, this was a posotive reaction to modernity

A third response shows that due to the increase of technology had massive effects on human socail issues, and this played its part in helping develop a society of capitolism

the comparison of the two images.

The images I have been asked to analyse are 'The Uncle Sam Range ‘Advert made in 1876 by Schumacher & Ettlinger, New York. And a poster by Saville Lumley which was made in 1915 during the First World War.
The first image is totally American everything in the image is covered in red, white and blue. It is also a very crammed image and when actually discovers that it is just an oven advert you find yourself quite bewildered on why there is so much activity in the image.
The image depicts a wealthy figure of Uncle Sam sitting next to the oven from the Uncle Sam range. He seems to have a lady serving the meals and a Black servant which shows that the image is clearly dated as it is still showing slavery as an acceptable tradition.
Intriguingly, a somewhat comical depiction of the world is also sat at the table with a large list with the names of countries on the list, and when you look closer it shows the list contains stereotypical un-appetising dishes from around the world IE. All Irishmen eat is potatoes etc. This shows a very ill educated approach and a distinct snobbery of the American people.
I think the purpose of the image is to show the American people how great America is, as this is an advert that came around 100 years after America had just gained its independence, so everything at the time was USA mania.
The second image is totally different. You can instantly tell it is a British due to how the gentleman is dressed and the decor in the home. The image is a propaganda poster during the First World War and its intention seems to be to guilt trip young, healthy gentlemen into joining the armed forces.
It depicts a somewhat reasonable looking man sat in an armchair with a son and daughter and the text reads” daddy what did you do in the Great War?” This suggests that the creator obviously wanted the men to read this and think “what would I tell my children?” and trying to make men sign up and join the forces fighting in France.
It is a fairly simple image but if you look into its meaning it shows alot more than just a family image, the male characters face suggest guilt as if he does not know how to respond to the question his daughter has just proposed and feels guilty because he did not go to war.
The two images differ greatly. One is a full blown celebration of American greatness, tempting you to go buy and oven filled with pride for your country whereas the other wants to guilt trip you into feeling you have to fight for your country. It is a heavy contrast but both images are just as powerful as one another.
I think from making this comparison I have learnt that image can be so strong if used correctly as these images from history have shown.

Comparison of two images

Compare and contrast the two images in relation to the following-
a) The choice and organisation of font and style of illustration
b) The purpose and meaning of the image
c) The intended audience of the image
d) The social and historical context of the image, such as social values at the time.
